Why a random team picker beats "captains pick"

Letting captains take turns picking team members is the traditional method and the worst one. The last few people picked feel terrible, the captains play favorites, and the resulting teams are often imbalanced anyway because captains prioritize friends over skill. Random assignment removes all of that. Every person has the same chance of being on any team, no one is publicly ranked, and the randomization itself feels fair to everyone watching.

Three methods of random team assignment

Method 1: Spin per person (small groups)

Build a wheel with one slice per team (Team Red, Team Blue, Team Green, Team Yellow — however many teams you need). For each person in your group, spin once and assign them to the team the wheel lands on. Simple, fast, but team sizes will vary by chance — fine for casual groups, less ideal for competitive matches.

Method 2: Balanced no-replacement (best for fairness)

If you have 10 people and want two teams of 5, build a wheel with "Team Red" listed five times and "Team Blue" listed five times. Turn on Remove on win. Now spin once per person: each spin removes one of the team slots from the wheel, so by spin 10 each team has exactly five people. Teams are guaranteed even.

Method 3: Skill-tier draft (for competitive games)

Build a wheel with just the team names. Group your players into tiers: top tier (skilled), middle, beginner. Within each tier, spin once per player to assign them to a team. Top-tier players are distributed evenly across teams before middle-tier players are added, which prevents one team from accidentally getting all the best players.

Pro tips for team assignment

Use distinct emoji per team

Emoji prefixes make team identity instant: 🔴 Team Red, 🔵 Team Blue, 🟢 Team Green. Easier to see at a glance, looks better on screen.

Share the wheel before the draft

Share the URL with everyone before spinning. Each person can pre-verify the team list is correct, and they can replay the draft from their own device if they want to confirm fairness.

Use the share URL for "team announcements"

After the draft, share the wheel state (with the final assignments noted in the history panel) so everyone has a permanent record of who's on which team.

Pair with a captain wheel

If teams need captains, use a second wheel of "team captain candidates" and spin once per team to pick the captain. Combine remove-on-win to ensure no one captains two teams.

What to put on a team wheel

The default team-picker preset loads four teams: Red, Blue, Green, Yellow. For most situations this is plenty. Customize to fit your context:

Frequently asked questions

How do I split a group into random teams?

Build a wheel with the team names as slices (Team Red, Team Blue, etc.). For each person in your group, spin once and assign them to the team the wheel picks. For guaranteed even team sizes, use the "no-replacement" trick: list each team multiple times (e.g., Team Red x5 for a 5-person team), turn on Remove on win, and spin once per person.

Can I make sure teams are balanced in size?

Yes — use the no-replacement method described above. Each team gets listed N times (where N = team size), and Remove on win removes a slot each spin. The wheel automatically balances because each team slot is consumed one at a time.

How do I split based on skill level?

Build separate wheels per skill tier. Spin the top-tier wheel first, distributing skilled players evenly. Then spin the middle-tier wheel, then beginner. This prevents one team from accidentally getting all the best players via pure chance.

Can the same team be picked twice in a row?

Yes by default — each spin is independent. To prevent immediate repeats, switch the wheel to use a "round-robin" approach with the no-replacement method.

Is this fair if everyone is watching?

Yes — and visibly so. The spin animation, the on-wheel percentage display, and the shareable URL all reinforce that you're not picking favorites. Share the URL beforehand and viewers can audit the team list and replay the spin on their own device.

How many teams can I have?

No hard limit. Two to six teams is the common range. Past eight teams the wheel slices get small but still spin fine. For 20+ teams, consider a category wheel approach (spin tournament bracket first, then team within).
